'AN OLD BEGA IDENTITY.
The news of the death of Mr. Ferdinand Beck was received in Bega a few days ago from Summer Hill, Sydney. Mr. Beck had been a resident of this district for upwards of 50 years, having acquired larg e landed properties and become very wealthy. Deceased was a native of West Prussia, and while serving in the Prussian army went througn the Polish revolution of 1849. In1851 Mr. Beck started for Ca lifornia, being attracted by glowing accounts from the 'GoldenWest', but landed in Central America, where he contracted the tropical fever. He then proceeded to New Orleans, remaining only a few mon ths, when he started for Cuba, but was not permitted to land, owing to the rebellion of 1852. He next journeyed to Rio Janeiro (Brazil), and after trading between South America and Africa was attrac ted to Victoria by the gold rush. After remaining about Ballarat and Bendigo a while, he went to Bega and settled down. His house was one of the first erected on the site where the present town sta nds. Mr. Beck leaves a widow and nine children and twenty-five grandchildren.' [S1098]
