Barney McGinn aged 60, with with his wife and 3 young children, sailed from Launceston on 23 Jan 1854 aboard the Black Swan and arrived in Melbourne in January 1854.

"My records indicate he died of dysentry which would have been rife on the goldfields. (Forrest Creek was the original name of the district and was renamed as the present day Castlemaine which was es tablished in 1851) so that would tie in. Life would have been pretty tough in 1854 because 25,000 miners were already on the fields by March 1852."
