NSW Marriage Register Volume No 1851364, Year & No. 1851/80

On the 11th March, 1841, John (Black Jack) and James (Red Jim) McKenna arrived in Australia on the "Portland" from Arholne of Dungannon in Mullyohearn, County Tyrone in Ireland. Both settled in the a rea known as King's Plains No. 2, a broad area covering sections of Forest Reefs, Millthorpe and the Blayney district. The area was administered by the Carcoar police district.

In this densely wooded area, John built a stone house on his property called Ros-my-lyn. In 1851 John married Catherine Clements, a house servant who had arrived in Australia aboard the "Oriental " a year earlier. Both their children Mary Jane (born 18.5.1852) and William (born 22.9.1853) were born at "Ros-my-lyn".

The land on which "Ros-my-lyn" was built was originally purchased from the Orange Police district by James McGinness and Mary Naven on 26th January, 1856. The area was then described as being "open f orest with permanent springs, about 5 miles south east from Beneree Lagoon in the area known as Kings Plains".

John McKenna built his house on land which was later purchased by McGinness. This may have been caused by primitive land surveying practices, as McKenna held the land all around "Ros-my-Lyn", althoug h it was not uncommon in those days that a person owning a building did not own the land it was built on.

John and Catherine operated the house as a wayside inn during the early years of the gold rushes. It was first licensed on 9th September, 1856 as the Fitz Roy Hotel. Catherine died in 1863 and John r emarried Joanne Grant in 1856.

The Fitzroy Hotel was a popular watering hole, particularly attracting large numbers of bullock teams transporting goods. A shanty town developed around the hotel, providing accommodation for bullock ies and travellers. The remnants of some of these buildings remain at the rear of the property.

Hoteliers in this era made a small fortune and John expanded his holdings throughout the district.

John's daughter, Mary Jane, married another local publican, John Noonan, in 1871. McKenna was by then running "Ros-my-lyn" as a farm and Noonan had the Royal Hotel at Forest Reefs.

In 1870, Forest Reefs was granted a Post Office licence (population in excess of 500). The Postmaster's position created many years of controversy with one postmaster absconding with a considerable a mount of cash, and another with financial difficulties sold the business, including the money order drawer.

The Postmaster General, in a bid to establish the Post Office in secure premises, gave the position to John McKenna. As "Ros-my-lyn" was several miles from the township, Alfred Myer, a candidate fo r the postmaster's job claimed that John McKenna would get his son-in-law John Noonan to operate the Post Office from his hotel. McKenna assured the P.M.G.'s Department that this would not happen. I t did.

McKenna later organized Henry Membert to operate the business but unfortunately postal inspectors found that mail had not been delivered from previous years, and John was sacked. He refused to hand o ver postal equipment, but was later forced to by the postal inspectors.

John McKenna died on 8th January, 1882 after being kicked by his horse. John and Mary Jane Noonan acquired "Ros-my-lyn" and changed its name to Garryowen shortly afterwards. Their children Margaret ( 1872), John (1874) and Denis (1878) were all born there.

"Garryowen" was connected to the McKenna / Noonan families for many years and was allocated to William McKenna in 1926 as a soldier settlement purchase. The building has also been used as a church , a horse changing station, a postmaster's residence, a farm and a family home at times through its colourful history. In more recent years, "Garryowen" was operated as a farm by the Wilson family a nd has undergone extensive restoration during the last 20 years by its present owner, local school teacher Ian Roberts.
