Convict details:
Sentence: 7 years for treason
Transported on the ship 'Hougoumont' - arrived in Western Australia 9 Jan 1868
Fenian details:
Arrested between Sep 1865 & Mar 1867, after the fenian uprising against the British. Several hundred were arrested. 105 were convicted and two thirds were transported to WA as convicts aboard the Ho
ugoumont. She sailed on the 12 Oct 1867 from Portland, England. Concerts were held every second or third night on the voyage. Joseph was one of the main participants and typically sang "Paddies Ev
ermore" & "Tell Me Mary". A journal named "The Wild Goose" was published during the journey. Joseph contributed " A Leap for Liberty" to the first issue. In it he recounted his arrest in Kerry aft
er the March rebellion, and his subsequent train escape. He had made his way to London, but was arrested there and taken aboard a train, handcuffed and escorted by Irish detectives. When the polic
e unwisely accede to his request that they remove his handcuffs to stop his hands swelling, he leapt through the window of the speeding train. Recaptured four days later, he was transported to Irela
nd under heavy guard to stand trial at Tralee, where he was sentenced to 7 years servitude. The Hougoumont arrived at Fremantle wharf on 10 Jan 1868.
In April 1868 Joseph received 6 weeks remission from gang labour for intervening in a vicious assault being made on the Fremantle prison schoolmaster by a violent Irish convict named Reardon. Josep
h was given a fenian (civilian) free pardon on the 15 May 1869. He had building experience and was contracted to build a bridge over the Swan River with other Fenians. Joseph married into a wealthy
, established catholic family and was a successful architect - builder. In partnership with fellow fenian Hugh Brophy (building contractor) until 1872. Among his many fine buildings, York Catholi
c Cathedral received particular acclaim, being held by one admirer to be " a gem of pure Gothic architecture". Also involved in building Perth Town Hall. He suffered from consumption and died fro
m it at his home in Howick St, Perth on 18 May 1885.
