'A SELF-CONFESSED THIEF. His wife having left him suddenly, disappearing without warning and leaving no trace, Frederick Henry Bowley (40), a salesman employed by a local piano company, became distra
ught when he found that he could not locate her. He could not give his mind to business. According to a statement made to the police, he took s lO from the firm's cash drawer, and spent the money a
t the races. Then, without going back to the shop to ascertain whether or not the theft had been discovered, he wrote a letter to the police admitting that he had stolen the money. Later he present
ed himself at the station, made a statement, and was locked up. Bowley said he had acted in this manner in order to attract the attention of his wife, all other means having failed. He thought that
, if she learned by the newspapers he was was in trouble, she would come to him. During his week in custody Bowley had been very despondent over the disappearnce of his wife, said Senior Detective H
ammond. His employers did not wish to press the charge and had stated their willingness to take him back.
The Magistrate observed that Bowley had been twice convicted of theft already. On one occasion he had been convicted and discharged, and on the second he had been fined s 5. It wae stretching the pro
visions of the Act a bit far in giving him probation this time, as he had been convicted only three months ago, but as he had given himself up and made a full confession, and in view of all the circu
mstances, he would be placed on probation for a period of two years. Restitution would be made at the
