DEATH OF MR JNO. NOONAN
Word was received by us late last night of the death of Mr. John Noonan, the popular host of "Garryowen". There will be a genuine and widespread regret on the announcement of these tidings; and know
ing the deceased gentleman for a number of years as a generous minded courteous man, we sincerely join in the condolences of the community with the family. Death took place after a long and painful i
llness extending over some 12 months, yesterday afternoon. A kidney complaint first gave warning of the approaching end, and, though the aid of a sea trip, and mineral baths were enlisted, the suffer
er reached home but to die. A pioneer of the west, Mr. Noonan made his name and fame by hard work, and well earned the rest he was able to enjoy during his last two years. He leaves a family of two s
ons and one daughter. The sons are John and Denis, and the daughter Mrs. E. Daley of Sydney. The funeral takes place on Tuesday, Christmas Day, when the cortege will leave deceased's late residence a
t 11am and will move to the Orange cemetery. A further account of the life of the deceased will in a later issue.

THE LATE JNO. NOONAN
AN APPRECIATION
(By our Millthorpe Correspondent)
Mr. John Noonan, whose lamented death was reported in our columns last Monday, was one of our oldest and best citizens. He was born at Limerick, Ireland, in 1841, and came to this state from Victori
a about 40 years ago. At one time he kept the hotel at Forest Reefs now run by Mr. Slattery, and afterwards commenced farming and grazing with great success. For many years he was a J.P. also the pop
ular and efficient President of the Millthorpe A. and P. Association. He was also a prominent member of the Progress Committee, and a director of the old B??? Co. He was one of the very best types o
f Irishmen - genial, witty, hospitable and though a devoted member of the R.C. Church, he was tolerant in his conduct towards others, and was highly esteemed by all creeds and classes. His hospitalit
y was proverbial, his beautiful residence, "Garryowen" on Forest Reefs Road, was well known all over New South Wales. Once in driving the writer out to a sale, he accidentaly dropped a remark that n
o one ever went away from "Garryowen" hungry, as his daughter and servants well knew his instructions that no one asking for food was to be denied. In business transactions he was the "soul of honour
", and on the day of his interment many who knew him all the time of his long residence in the district testified to the satisfaction they always found in doing business with him and the esteem in wh
ich he was held, and helped on the scriptural principle of "not letting his left hand know what his right hand was doing". About two years ago symptoms of an internal disease manifested themselves, a
nd though he several times saw the best specialists in Sydney, and also took a sea voyage to New Zealand, he gradually became worse. The local Doctor in consultation with one of the ablest physician
s from Orange did everything that medical skill and ingenuity could suggest, but the end came on Sunday afternoon about 5 o'clock. Universal regret was expressed when the news of his death reached Mi
llthorpe, and all classes lamented the loss of one of our best men - a good citizen, a kind parent, a true Christian. Mr. Noonan's last appearance in public was at a meeting in Blackmore's Hall, Milt
horpe, about 3 months ago for the election of two local men to represent Millthorpe and district on the Shire Council. He then spoke with all his old fire on behalf of Forest Reef farmers, and object
ed to two Millthorpe businessmen being nominated as candidates, insisting on one being a country farmer so as to better represent the farmers. The regard in which our late friend was held was shown o
n Monday afternoon, when enquiries elicited the fact that all the available vehicles were engaged for Tuesday morning, and it was impossible to hire or borrow one anywhere. Many Millthorpe resident
s who wished to pay a last tribute of respect were unable to attend the funeral on his account, while numbers of those went to Orange by the 9am train. Mr. Gain, of Orange, was the undertaker, and t
he coffin was a handsome one made of polished cedar with silver mountings. A number of beautiful wreaths were deposited on the coffin and about a quarter to twelve on the morning of Christmas Day th
e mournful procession wended its way to Orange R.C. cemetery, the late Mrs. Noonan being buried there. The coffin bore the simple inscription "John Noonan. Born 1841. Died Dec 23, '06, aged 65 years.
By the time the funeral cortege reached Orange it had assumed immense proportions, showing the respect in which the late Mr. Noonan was held. The Rev. Father Ryan conducted the service in the R.C. Ch
urch and also conducted the obsequies at the graveside, and a sympathetic assemblage paid their last tribute of respect to a good man. Though he hated flattery, and would have been the last man to ac
cept fullsome adulation, yet of John Noonan it can be said he will be missed for years to come. His faults were few and his good qualities many. Into the feelings of his family we may not enter, bu
t the writer feels that he has lost a friend, and that the community is the poorer for Mr. Noonan's death; yet we feel the truth and beauty of Brownings words "Say not good night, but in some bright
er clime bid me good morning."
